The Differences Between Trimming, Splitting, and Cropping

Trimming, splitting, and cropping are all basic video editing features when editing a video. However, some people may have problems figuring out the differences between trimming, splitting, and cropping. Don't worry, you will get the answer after you read below.

Trimming

As we mentioned above, trimming always refers to the process of taking off either part of the beginning or end of a video clip to shorten the video length and retain the desired video content. It's essential to make sure that your videos start and end at the right point.

The first few seconds of your video are important to grab the attention of your viewers and convince them to view it further. A dull beginning of a video will let its viewers get bored with continuing to watch this video. So, you need to trim the unwanted beginning of the video.

By trimming, it's easy to remove all unnecessary parts of a video and leave the content that your viewers might be interested in. It's an essential step if you want to be successful in video editing.

Splitting

Splitting video is also a fundamental tool in the video editing process. Splitting is usually understood as separating a long video into two parts or several parts and then removing the middle section and combining these parts together.

Whatever video clips you capture, there must be more content than you need.  Imagine that you have shot a long video and want to upload it in parts to social media platforms because of the video length limits, you need to cut it into several parts. Or you need to delete the middle part of a video and insert a video clip into another one. This is where we need to split the video.

However, splitting video is often confused with trimming video because they both contain removing some parts from the original video. Trimming video means deleting the beginning or the end of a video, whereas splitting video means cutting a video into several parts or deleting a part of the video file from elsewhere.

Cropping

Cropping video is another basic video editing tool equal to trimming and splitting. Cropping adjusts the unwanted outside edges from video clips by changing the dimensions or aspect ratio of a video.

Sometimes, when you shoot video clips, you may put the camera too far away so that the subject looks small. Or maybe you filmed an interview and left too much room above the speakers. These problems can be fixed by cropping away the excess, allowing your subject to better fills the shot.

Another scene is that if you upload videos to social media platforms, you'll find every platform has its fixed aspect ratio. Or it will crop your video automatically, then you may lose important information. So, before you post the video to social networks, you need to crop the video by using a video cropper, like MiniTool MovieMaker.
