Ransomware attacks have become a significant threat to businesses. In 2019 alone, it
is estimated that the cybercrime industry will make $2 billion from ransomware.
Unfortunately, there are no simple solutions for preventing ransomware attacks.
Leading experts at Zscaler suggest, "These attacks have
quickly become a preferred method of extortion by cybercriminals. As
organizations hold larger amounts of sensitive data”and as remote and hybrid
work models expose endpoints to new vulnerabilities”hackers are taking advantage
by leveraging this effective cybercrime method."
However, following these tips can help you protect your
organization from this threat:
Regularly Backup All Data
One of the most effective ways to prevent ransomware attacks
is to regularly backup all of your data. This means that you should have a
backup plan that allows you to save the contents of your computer or hard drive
onto an external source. You can do this in a variety of ways, including:
1. Using cloud storage services like Dropbox or Google Drive
2. Backing up files on an external hard drive, USB drive, or
external portable device
3. Saving files onto CDs, DVDs, flash drives
Use Multi-Factor Authentication
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) confirms the identity of
an individual seeking access to a system or resource. It usually involves
something you know, like a password, something you have, like your phone, and
sometimes even something you are, such as your fingerprint. By combining
multiple forms of verification into one login process, MFA makes it more
difficult for attackers to gain unauthorized access to critical systems and
sensitive data.
Set Up a Brute Force Detection System
A brute force detection system is a feature that most modern
web applications have, although it's not very well known. A brute force
detection system can help you detect when someone is trying to log in with a
password that doesn't match the one you have on record. When an unauthorized
user is accessing an account, it will trigger this alert and inform you about
it.
It's important to note that using a brute force detection
system doesn't mean your website will never be hacked; it offers protection
against primary security threats such as hacking or spamming.
1. Check if your web host offers this feature (most do).
2. Decide whether or not setting up this kind of protection
is worth investing time.
Recognize Solicitous Emails and Communication
It is essential to know that the sender's name and email
address don't match. For example, check for spelling mistakes, grammar errors,
unusual formatting and attachments if you receive an email from an unknown
person.
You can also look at links they have provided in the email
should be checked to see if they are legitimate or not.
If you are unsure about a request made by someone via email, do not respond immediately. Instead, contact your IT administrator or another person with more experience with such issues before replying.
Having a sound backup system is the best way to prevent ransomware threats. However, it's not enough to have backups in place. You also need to ensure you regularly back up your data and test it from time to time.
